“Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.” - Jane Goodall
First and foremost, Emily Koopman is a person who cares. Whether it's about animals, people, the environment, or entertainment - Emily cares, passionately about it all.
Born and raised in the seaside island town of Campbell River, B.C, Emily had plenty of opportunities to learn about nature and the world around her. When she was 6-years-old, she asked her elementary school principal if she could organize a bake sale to benefit The Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Foundation after hearing the population was on the decline. She did, and her first-grade class raised $200 and made the organization's monthly newsletter. While Koopman has worked with several different organizations and helped numerous charities around the world, one of her greatest achievements to date was single-handedly planning a benefit concert in support of Plan Canada's Spread the Net efforts. Vancouver acts Brock Zanrosso and Kate Morgan performed, while the event was hosted by Canadian actors Gig Morton and Brett Dier. This time, at 16, she raised more than 10 times what she did as a 6-year-old.
Koopman wrote her first "novella" at age 5 based on her experiences in Scotland. After being allowed backstage at a taping of a Disney TV show and given a script for the episode, she fell in love with the idea of being able to direct her passion for writing into something visual. "I find writing very cathartic," she says. "I can completely lose myself in somebody else's life, with zero consequences."
Nowadays, as a Vancouver Film School grad, she's focusing on Sci-Fi and Horror, but enjoys dabbling in every genre out there. She's won numerous awards for her screenwriting, including taking first place at the Las Vegas Film Festival in 2015 for her screenplay, "Long Way Home". One of her horror scripts, "The Warners", was a semi-finalist at the 2017 Women in Horror Film Festival and made the finals of FEARnyc in New York City, among others. These are the only two screenplays she's placed in the festival circuit thus far.
In her spare time, she has created several different websites, each with an individual purpose. Her first website was an entertainment blog which featured interviews with up and coming talent, this site eventually also became a portfolio for her work. Next, she gathered a group of empowering women to start Girls Help Girls, a place for women to learn from other empowering women. Unfortunately, the project failed to attract an audience, despite its impressive contributors, and was shut down. Next, Koopman took a shot at photography and found success photographing travel, wildlife, and live events. She was lucky enough to be embraced by the local Vancouver drag queen community and could often found frequenting drag shows around the city.
Koopman is now an avid writer, photographer, traveler, and eager conservationist who is ready to take on the world.
